Public gatherings when done indoors are a natural environment for the spread of disease. Outdoor gatherings are less likely to be an issue.

General Public or Family Gatherings

Building/Location:

  • For indoor gatherings choose a location that has bathroom facilities that can be cleaned and sanitized. Identified changing areas are ideal.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing bathroom and changing facilities before and after the gathering would be expected to minimize the transfer of disease.
  • Spray sanitizer should be available in the bathrooms to use with the changing stations.
  • Encourage the younger ones to wash their hands after using the bathroom.
  • Hand sanitizer should be available for those who want to use it.

Attendees:

  • If your child has diarrhea or a serious illness it is best to keep them home to prevent them from spreading what they have to others.
  • Clean and sanitize after yourself when using the changing stations.
  • Cleanup after yourself and family in general.
  • Someone should be designated to clean and inspect the facility after you're done.

Parking:

  • To maintain a safe environment, assign personnel to the parking lot to oversee children and manage traffic flow.

Food:

  • Properly handling food at a public or family gathering is important to prevent food born illness.
  • Everyone that prepares food for potluck tables should have the health and safety in mind for everyone that attends. Educate yourself on food safety before preparing food for potluck tables.
  • Ensure that all surfaces, utensils, plates, and dishes are clean and sanitized before use.
  • When serving food at public or family gatherings it is important to ware sanitary gloves, hair nets, and aprons to prevent any contamination from the server.

    Church

    • Church facilities should have a sanitation standard operating procedure (SSOP) that ensures the cleaning and sanitizing of floors, chairs, drinking fountains, tables, garbage cans, door hardware, etc. Cleaning and sanitizing should be done on regular intervals
    • Extra attention should be given to bathrooms and changing areas.

    School

    • School facilities should have a sanitation standard operating procedure (SSOP) that ensures the cleaning and sanitizing of floors, chairs, desks, drinking fountains, tables, garbage cans, door hardware, etc. Cleaning and sanitizing should be done on regular intervals
    • Extra attention should be given to bathrooms and locker rooms.
    • Any food handling must be done according to federal and state guidelines for public schools.
    • If there is a child with a serious illness, they should stay home to prevent spreading their illness to someone else.
